The 4S Against Dengue

Because Dengue cases is still rising, Department of Health (DOH) is constantly reminding the public to follow the 4S against dengue.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), “Dengue is flu-like illness spread by the bite of an aedes mosquito infected with dengue virus.” The biting intensity of mosquitoes is “highest two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.”

Below are Dengue symptoms:
  • High fever of 40°Celsius/104°Farenheit
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Swollen glands
  • Rash

Dengue has no treatment yet, but it can be prevented. Here is DOHs 4S against dengue.

  • Throw away, turn over, empty any container that may accumulate rain water.
  • Always place a tight lid on containers used for water storage.
  • Check for mosquito larvae or pupae in stored water.

2. Seek early consultation

  • Use screens on doors and windows
  • Wear long sleeves shirts, long pants, socks to avoid mosquito bites at dusk and dawn.
  • Use mosquito repellent on your clothing and exposed skin.

4. Support fogging/spraying

  • In hotspot areas where increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.
Again, dengue has no cure yet but it can be prevented by keeping our home clean and staying healthy and boosting our immune system, and by keeping our self protected.

Stay safe everyone!

Dengue Fever and Dehydration

National Dengue Alert was declared by Department of Health last July 15 as dengue cases continuously increasing in many regions in our country.

As reported, there were approximately 100,000 cases of dengue across the Philippines in only the first 6 months of 2019. This is 85% higher than the reported cases on the same period last year. Thus,
epidemics have been declared in Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Northern Mindanao. (Source: CNN Health)

As a mother, I am afraid of this Dengue fever so much. Dengue fever has no cure so far but we can do something to prevent it or manage it when you already have.

What is Dengue fever?

Dengue fever is avector-borne disease transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito. There are four serotypes categorized under the dengue virus, which can infect a person.

Symptoms of dengue virus can vary from mild to severe fever. Severe dengue, which are potentially deadly, include dengue shock syndrome, dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.

However, approximately 75 – 90% of patients acquire dengue fever without any symptoms, not even fever. Which means that many individuals who fall ill during their ‘1st symptomatic dengue fever’ in fact had their 2nd attack, which tend to be severe.

What are the symptoms of Dengue fever?

Betwen 1.5 – 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, Dengue fever introduces itself with flu-like symptoms. It will resolve on its own within 2 – 7 days, if it’s a mild case.

The first symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, high fever, pain behind the eyes, and vomiting or nausea. Body rash be like to occur later on. The absence of body rash was identified to be a risk of severe dengue mainly because the  body fail to recognize the illness.

Between 3-7  days, severe dengue develops after the 1st signs of illness with worsening symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, vomiting blood, rapid breathing, and fatigue or restlessness.

According to Dr. Leong Hoe Nam, infectious disease specialist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, the peculiar feature of the infection is that it can cause platelets (tiny cell fragments that form blood clots to stop bleeding) to fall steeply, which leads to bleeding in the internal organs, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Dengue Fever and Dehydration

There's no specific treatment for dengue fever exists. Dengue fever patients lose more body fluid and thus, are more susceptible to dehydration. Doctor may recommend to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration from vomiting and a high fever.

Keeping the body hydrated helps in managing the Dengue fever. Hydration prevent the disease from getting worse and advancing to dengue hemorrhagic fever, or the complicated stage when the blood vessels start to leak and cause bleeding. Platelets that are effective in stopping bleeding are mature platelets. This platelet maturation process can go smoothly if there are enough body fluid.

While recovering from dengue fever, it is very important to watch for following signs and symptoms of dehydration:
  • Decreased urination
  • Few or no tears
  • Dry mouth or lips
  • Lethargy or confusion
  • Cold or clammy extremities
However, water is not enough. This is because the fluid lost by the body is composed of water and ions, and should also be replaced by the same. Doctors will give intravenous (IV) fluids and electrolytes (salts) to replace those lost through vomiting or diarrhea.

Other than IV fluids and electrolytes, ion supply drink like Pocari Sweat can help prevent dehydration in patients with dengue fever.  It has a composition close to the body fluid, is quickly absorbed and retained longer in the body. Thus, helping the process of platelets maturation to run smoothly and on time.

Pocari Sweat contains the right amount of water and ions needed by the body – making it the ideal fluid replacement.

Again, there is still no cure to Dengue fever. But it can be prevented by boosting our body immune system and can be managed by keeping the body hydrated.

Did you know that Mosquito is the number one man killer?

Before, I thought that during rainy season the population of mosquitoes is higher. But did you know that during summertime, the population of insects and bugs is greater? This is because the warm temperature with the growth of new plants around, allow the bugs to fulfill their life cycle. They can thrive with the environment temperature because they are cold blooded and that they are more active during summer. Their larvae grow faster and that's the peak of mating.

In our country, it's the dengue-carrying mosquitoes that most of us are afraid of. But when I read about the history of mosquitoes, there are other deadliest diseases that mosquitoes carry. And as I already said, mosquito is the number one killer of man, killing over one million people each year.

As much as we hate them at home, we cannot totally get rid of them. But we can make our safe from bugs. Here are some tips to keep our home safe from bugs and mosquitoes.

Keep our home clean. Cleanliness is always the key to keep the bugs and insects away. We must clean our home everyday and do at least twice a month general cleaning. If possible hire expert services like that of industrial cleaning services uk, at least once a year to have your entire home clean. Throw away things at home that you are not using and do proper segregation.

Change bedding regularly. This to avoid bed bugs. We must change our bed sheets and pillow case regularly. As much as possible, sun dry washed bedding.

Keep water container closed. Did you know that mosquito loves clean water more than the waste dirty water? But just the same, don't stock water at home as much as possible. Because mosquitoes need water to complete their life cycle.

Avoid perfume. Yes, especially those with citrus, sweet and flowery smell. Bugs love those scents so instead of leaving, they will be enticed to stay inside your home.

Use insect or bug spray. If you already see insect infestations at home, you may use insect spray. As much as possible, use insect spray that is safe or natural and unscented. Speaking of natural insect spray, Daddy A is thinking of extracting the citronella oil from our Lemon grass plant at home. But if you have Citronella plant at home, it is much better. Also, there are insect repelling plants like Neem tree that you can plant at home.

Use safe insect repellent lotion. If there are infestations already, we may use insect repellent lotion especially with the children and old people at home, who have low resistance. And like the insect spray, make sure to use natural and safe insect repellent lotion.

Stay healthy. If we are healthy, we will have greater resistance against the killer diseases the mosquitoes are carrying. So we must keep our safe healthy by taking in more vitamins.

Those are just some of the tips on how to keep our home safe from bugs and mosquitoes. Like what I have said, we cannot keep our home totally free from bugs and mosquitoes but safe, yes :)

Keep safe always guys!
